Featured Artist and Jurist:

Peter Adams, President Emeritus,

California Art Club: 1993-2021

Contemporary American artist Peter Adams was born in Los Angeles on August 27, 1950. He received his training at Art Center College of DesignOtis Art Institute, Instituto de Bellas Artes, San Miguel de Allende, and at the Lukits Academy of Fine Arts in Los Angeles. At the Lukits Academy, Adams spent seven years, from 1970 to 1977, in diligent formal training, including four years as the personal apprentice to the renowned classical painter of murals, landscapes, and portraits, Theodore N. Lukits (1897-1992).

From his years with Lukits, studying still life compositions consisting of sculptures and porcelains from various Chinese dynasties that were part of the Lukits personal collection.

Adams gained a heightened appreciation for Asian objects d'art and antiques. This interest later led to Adams traveling throughout Asia, and in 1981 he became the first American artist to travel and paint unescorted through the People’s Republic of China. His fascination for Asia gained him great acclaim when, in 1987, he was the only American artist to travel and paint with the Mujahideen rebels in Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. Today, Adams combines Eastern design concepts with the Western sense of depth through atmosphere.

From 1993 -2021. Adams served as president of the historic California Art Club, which was established in 1909 and is one of the largest and most active professional arts organizations in the country. Under his leadership, the Club’s roster has grown from 80 members to nearly 3,000 at present. Today, the California Art Club is recognized as a leading proponent of the current national realist art movement.

About SLOPOKE: We created SLOPOKE in 2011 because the western art market was good despite the recession and at that time no other gallery between Laguna Beach and Carmel  specialized in this  genre which remains popular to this day.

We wanted a unique name that stated its purpose and locale without calling it just another “art show.” As it was then in San Luis Obispo County, it became the SLOPOKE Western Art Rodeo. In the beginning, it was a multiple-artist gallery show that by the 5th year outgrew our fine art gallery. We reorganized and spun it off as a separate business in 2016. With a  thought  to replace the former Peppertree Art Show, we moved it to Flag Is Up Farms, a famous and lovely horse ranch at the invitation of  Sculptor Pat Roberts and International Trainer Monty Roberts located in Solvang, Santa Barbara County. By then, advertising and market awareness had branded it as simply the SLOPOKE.

A twice juried art show, once to be accepted and then again for awards, SLOPOKE is a western-themed exhibition and sale. We present art of the west, not necessarily just  “western art" as that term has become shorthand for just "cowboy and Indian" art. We mix traditional and contemporary styles and look for emerging artists who paint the 21st Century West as well as

those recreating the historical West. We are deliberately broad in our definition of art of the West to include ranch life, historical and contemporary Native American life, landscapes, seascapes, urbanscapes and wildlife in all media and styles from realism to abstract work. We seek art that captures the unique spirit and culture of the American West.

Jurists are selected from a pool of regionally recognized, experienced artists who are at the top of their game. We have been honored with such well-known artist/jurists as JoAnn Pearlta, John Budicin, Gayle Garner Roski, Thomas Blackshire, Jim Wodark, Denis Milhomme, Chris Slatoff, and Michael

Obermeyer. We are tickled to have Peter Adams as our artist/jurist for 2023 our13th year and 8th at Flag Is Up Farms.

We jury in a limited number of artists either near their peak in development or just emerging who demonstrate comparable skill and creativity in their work. We invite many but only 25-30 artists are accepted each year. We make awards for Best Painting, Best Sculpture, Best of Show and Best Animal or Wildlife Art , Best Figurative Art, and an Artist Choice Award sponsored by Art of the West, Western Art Collector, and Western Art and Architecture magazines respectively. We encourage all artists to subscribe to one of these magazines or another of their choice because it is the most cost-effective way to keep abreast of market trends, collector interest, and a source of inspirational ideas. We delight in discovering and promoting new talent in the regional art market.

SLOPOKE is staged in a 6,000 sq ft barn repurposed for various uses at Flag Is Up Farms. The SLOPOKE is unique and the best exhibition of contemporary art on California’s Central Coast because we know that quality of presentation helps promote the sale of quality art. SLOPOKE strives for a museum-like presentation with an open floor plan, white uncluttered display walls, color-correct LED lighting, and an authentic western venue and atmosphere.

SLOPOKE is a product of ENTREPRISE, LLC - an entrepreneurial art enterprise comprising SLOPOKE Events, for themed art shows on the Central Coast and representation at the Los Angeles Art Show, and Digimagination, a digital imaging and design service for advertising, photography, art prints or giclees

to support artists and collectors alike.
